Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Thursday, May 24, 2012.

Severe weather developed over the North Central US on Thursday, as a low pressure system moved over the Upper Midwest. This created a frontal boundary that stretched from the Great Lakes through the Central Plains and produced moderate to heavy showers and thunderstorms. These storms produced heavy rainfall and strong winds for Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Rainfall totals ranged around 2 inches across the region, with heaviest rainfall reported in Minneapolis, Minnesota with a mid-day total of 2.10 inches. Flood advisories have been issued across the Upper Midwest due to this low moving frontal boundary. Meanwhile, the back side of this system allowed for another front to linger over the Northern Rockies. This system stretched into the Pacific Northwest and produced scattered showers throughout the day. Cooler temperatures over Northern Rockies allowed for snow showers to develop at the highest elevations in western Montana and northwestern Wyoming.

South of this activity, winds increased over the Southwest as a trough of low pressure moved in from the west. This created another warm and dry day for Arizona, New Mexico, and the Great Basin, which kept fire danger high.

In the East, heavy rainfall and strong winds associated with thunderstorm activity continued over southern Florida and the Bahamas. To the north, however, lighter and more widespread showers persisted in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states as a frontal boundary stalled over the region.

Wind Advisory
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 1:45 PM PDT on May 24, 2012

... Wind Advisory in effect from 1 PM MST /1 PM PDT/ to 10 PM MST
/10 PM PDT/ Friday...

The National Weather Service in Phoenix has issued a Wind
Advisory... which is in effect from 1 PM MST /1 PM PDT/ to 10 PM
MST /10 PM PDT/ Friday.

* Affected area... southwest and south central Arizona as well as the
lower deserts of southeastern California. This includes the greater
Phoenix area as well as the communities of Imperial... Gila
Bend... Casa Grande and Yuma.

* Timing... winds will steadily increase during the morning hours on
Friday and peak by early afternoon with strong gusty winds to
continue into the evening hours.

* Winds... south to southwest winds 20 to 35 mph gusting to near 50
mph especially in favored wind prone area or higher terrain
locations.

* Impacts... strong winds will kick up areas of blowing dust and sand
which will sharply lower visibility and create dangerous driving
conditions. Southerly Crosswinds will affect high profile traffic
on east-west oriented roads such as interstates 8 and 10. Drivers
of high profile vehicles should drive with caution.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Wind Advisory means that sustained wind speeds of between
30 and 40 mph are expected... or wind gusts of between 40 and
58 mph. Winds this strong can make driving difficult... especially
for high profile vehicles. In addition... strong winds over desert
areas could result in briefly lowered visibilities to well under
a mile at times in blowing dust or blowing sand. Use extra
caution.

Fire Weather Warning
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 2:14 PM PDT on May 24, 2012

... Red flag warning remains in effect from 11 am MST /11 am PDT/
to 8 PM MST /8 PM PDT/ Friday for strong winds... low relative
humidity and very high fire danger for the western Arizona
deserts and the lower Colorado River valley...

* affected area... in Arizona... Yuma/Martinez Lake and
vicinity/lower Colorado River valley AZ. In California... lower
Colorado River valley CA.

* Winds... south 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.

* Timing... strong gusty winds will develop during the morning hours
Friday... with the strongest winds expected in the afternoon and
early evening.

* Relative humidity... as low as 13 percent.

* Impacts... fuels are very dry and fire danger is very high.
These conditions... combined with low relative humidity and
strong winds will lead to widespread hazardous fire weather
conditions.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Please advise the appropriate officials and fire crews in the
field of this red flag warning.
