Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Thursday, May 24, 2012.

Rain and thunderstorms will continue across parts of the Midwest and Central Plains on Thursday as low pressure forms along a cold front extending through the Central U.S. The heaviest amounts of rain are anticipated near the front in areas of northern Wisconsin, southern Minnesota and Iowa. There is a slight risk of severe storms for the Upper and Mid-Mississippi Valleys Thursday afternoon and night with damaging wind gusts and isolated tornadoes.

In the West, a strong storm system will drop southward from the Gulf of Alaska on Thursday. This system will lead to an increase in showers and possible thunderstorms across the Pacific Northwest and Northern Intermountain West. The colder airmass accompanying this system will lower snow levels in the mountains and cause temperatures to run about 10 degrees below normal for this time of year. Meanwhile, winds will pick up across the rest of the West, increasing fire danger potential across the Southwest and parts of southeastern Utah and southwestern Colorado.

In the East, light showers and afternoon thunderstorms will remain possible across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states. To the south, heavy rain and strong thunderstorms with gusty winds are expected to continue across the southern tip of Florida. Saturated grounds from heavy rainfall that occurred during the last couple of days combined with Thursday\'s rainfall will continue flood concerns near Miami-Dade County.

Wind Advisory
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 3:46 AM MDT on May 24, 2012

... Wind Advisory remains in effect from 11 am PDT /11 am MST/ to
8 PM PDT /8 PM MST/ Friday...

A Wind Advisory remains in effect from 11 am PDT /11 am MST/ to
8 PM PDT /8 PM MST/ Friday for most of southern Nevada and
southeast California and the Lake Mead National Recreation Area
and Colorado River valley.

* Winds: southwest winds at 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph
possible.

* Timing: winds will increase during the morning hours and peak
during the afternoon... and gradually diminish around sunset.

* Locations: the Las Vegas Valley... Pahrump... Beatty...
Caliente... Pioche... Boulder City... Laughlin... Primm... Death
Valley... Yucca Valley... Morongo Valley... Needles... .Lake Mead
National Recreation Area.

* Impacts: strong Crosswinds creating difficult driving
conditions. Areas of blowing sand and dust are
possible... especially near Dry Lake beds. Visibilities may be
reduced at times due to the blowing sand and dust.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Wind Advisory means that Crosswinds are expected to be strong
enough to make driving difficult... especially for high profile
vehicles. In addition... strong winds over desert areas could result
in briefly lowered visibilities to well under a mile at times in
blowing dust or blowing sand. Use extra caution.

Fire Weather Warning
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 3:46 AM PDT on May 24, 2012

... Red flag warning remains in effect from 2 PM this afternoon to
11 PM PDT Friday for strong winds and low relative humidity for
fire weather zones 226... 227... 228 and 229...

* affected area... in California... fire weather zone 226 Owens
Valley/southern Inyo Forest... fire weather zone 227 Death
Valley National Park... fire weather zone 228 Mojave Desert and
fire weather zone 229 lower Colorado River valley.

* Timing... red flag criteria is expected to be met as winds
increase across Southern California by late this afternoon ahead
of an unseasonably strong area of low pressure. Gusty winds will
subside slightly in some areas and rh values may recover briefly
overnight to below criteria... but will easily meet criteria
again by late Friday morning areawide.

* Wind... southwest to west 15 to 25 mph with gusts around 35 mph
today... and gusts up near 50 mph on Friday. The east slopes of
the Sierra may see their strongest winds tonight when gusts to
60 mph are possible.

* Humidity... minimum values 8 to 15 percent.

* Impacts... the combination of gusty winds... low relative
humidity and dry fuels will create conditions that are
favorable for extreme fire behavior.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions
are either occurring or are imminent. A combination of strong
winds... low relative humidity... and warm temperatures will create
extreme fire growth potential.
