... February 2010 regional climate summary...
Summary for the San Francisco Bay area and Monterey Bay area... February 2010 lacked any notable stand-out weather events. Temperatures didn't stray too far from normal. Precipitation totals were below normal across the northern part of the region and a above normal across the south. But in general... rainfall totals were not significantly above or below what is expected for the month of February.
The first three days of the month were dry... but an unsettled pattern then took over from the 4th and continued through the 12th. During this time period... four separate rain events dropped light to moderate amounts of rainfall. A ridge of high pressure gradually amplified along the West Coast during the middle part of the month... diverting the storm track well to the north of California. This ridge resulted in eight consecutive days of dry and mild weather. Wet weather returned on the 21st when a Pacific weather system undercut the ridge and moved into central and Southern California. The remainder of February was relatively wet... with the wettest storm moving through on the afternoon and evening of the 23rd. That storm system dropped two to four inches of rain in the coastal mountains... and generally from one to two inches elsewhere except for the drier inland valleys which picked up a half inch or less. Rainfall totals for the month ranged from 70 to 100% of normal across the San Francisco Bay area... and from 100 to 130% of normal from Santa Cruz County south. Year-to-date rainfall totals (july 1, 2009 to February 28, 2010) range from 90 to 100 percent of normal for the northern and central part of the San Francisco Bay area... and from 110 to 120 percent from Santa Clara County southward. These types of rainfall departures are not unexpected in an El Nino winter when the likelihood of above normal precipitation is greater across the southern part of the state of California.
Temperature departures from normal during the month of February were similar to January departures. Average high temperatures were a little below normal and low temperatures were above normal. Overall... mean monthly temperatures ended up very close to normal. High temperatures at a few locations on the 23rd were the coolest on record for the date. Otherwise... no daily record temperature records were set or tied during February 2010.
