High Surf Advisory
Statement as of 4:26 AM PST on January 24, 2015

...High surf advisory remains in effect until 3 PM PST Sunday...

* waves and surf...10 to 12 feet at 15 to 18 seconds. Combined seas over 15 feet are possible.

* Timing...tonight through Sunday afternoon.

* Locations...from the Sonoma coastline south through the Big Sur coastline.

* Impacts... localized beach erosion. Large breaking waves along the coast will lead to increased wave run-up on beaches with waves topping and washing over large rocks and jetties. These large waves can be erratic and unpredictable. Use extra caution near the surf zone as these large waves will be capable of sweeping people into the frigid and turbulent waters.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Remember that high surf is often associated with riptides...and can be powerful enough to snap a surfboard in half. If you are caught in a riptide do not swim against it. Instead...swim parallel to shore until you are free of the powerful current.
