... A major change to the weather will be seen late this week and
into the weekend...
A strong Pacific storm is expected to develop and move into the
Pacific northwest on Thursday and then south into the Great Basin
Friday and Saturday. Although showers will be seen... the main
affects of this system will be winds and cooler temperatures.
Winds will begin to increase Thursday afternoon... but strongest
winds will be seen Friday and Saturday. Southwest winds ahead of the
cold front associated with this storm will develop Friday with the
possibility of downslope winds developing across the southern
Sierra. Wind gusts to 35 mph or higher are likely across much of the
area Friday afternoon... while north winds will be seen on Saturday
behind the front.
The cold front associated with this storm is expected to move through
the area late Friday night and Saturday which will allow for a
dramatic drop in temperatures from the highs expected Wednesday and
Thursday. High temperatures on Saturday will likely be in the 50s to
low 60s across central Nye... Lincoln and much of Inyo counties...
while upper 60s to low 70s will be seen in the southern portion of
the district. At the same time... overnight lows will be dropping to
the lowest readings of the season with many readings well below
freezing by Sunday morning across central Nevada.
Although the winds and colder temperatures will be the main
weather concern with this storm... rain and snow showers are expected
especially across the southern Sierra and central Nevada Friday
night and Saturday. Amounts are expected to be light however... but
snow accumulations of a few inches may be seen before the storm
leaves the area on Sunday.
