Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Thursday, May 24, 2012.

Rain and thunderstorms will continue across parts of the Midwest and Central Plains on Thursday as low pressure forms along a cold front extending through the Central U.S. The heaviest amounts of rain are anticipated near the front in areas of northern Wisconsin, southern Minnesota and Iowa. There is a slight risk of severe storms for the Upper and Mid-Mississippi Valleys Thursday afternoon and night with damaging wind gusts and isolated tornadoes.

In the West, a strong storm system will drop southward from the Gulf of Alaska on Thursday. This system will lead to an increase in showers and possible thunderstorms across the Pacific Northwest and Northern Intermountain West. The colder airmass accompanying this system will lower snow levels in the mountains and cause temperatures to run about 10 degrees below normal for this time of year. Meanwhile, winds will pick up across the rest of the West, increasing fire danger potential across the Southwest and parts of southeastern Utah and southwestern Colorado.

In the East, light showers and afternoon thunderstorms will remain possible across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states. To the south, heavy rain and strong thunderstorms with gusty winds are expected to continue across the southern tip of Florida. Saturated grounds from heavy rainfall that occurred during the last couple of days combined with Thursday\'s rainfall will continue flood concerns near Miami-Dade County.

High Wind Watch
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 8:57 PM MDT on May 23, 2012

... High wind watch remains in effect from Friday morning through
Friday evening...

A high wind watch remains in effect from Friday morning through
Friday evening.

* Winds: south to southwest winds at 30 to 40 mph with gusts to 65
mph.

* Timing: winds will increase shortly after sunrise and
gradually strengthen to warning level by late morning. The
strongest winds are expected during the afternoon hours and
gradually diminish toward sunset.

* Locations: Kingman... Colorado City... pipe Spring Monument...
Golden Valley... Dolan Springs... Wikieup and Yucca.

* Impacts: strong Crosswinds may be seen on Interstate 40...
especially east of Kingman. Blowing dust and sand may
rapidly lower visibilities to near zero.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A high wind watch means there is the potential for a hazardous high
wind event. Sustained winds of at least 40 mph and... or gusts of
58 mph or stronger may occur in the watch area. Continue to monitor
forecasts for the latest information.

Fire Weather Warning
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 3:12 PM MDT on May 23, 2012

... Red flag warning in effect from 2 PM PDT /2 PM MST/ Thursday
to 11 PM PDT /11 PM MST/ Friday for strong winds and low relative
humidity for fire weather zones 101... 102 and 466...

The National Weather Service in Las Vegas has issued a red flag
warning for strong winds and low relative humidity... which is in
effect from 2 PM PDT /2 PM MST/ Thursday to 11 PM PDT /11 PM MST/
Friday.

* Affected area... in Arizona... fire weather zone 101 Lake Mead
nra/Colorado River-AZ side and fire weather zone 102 northwest
deserts/northwest plateau. In Nevada... fire weather zone 466
Lake Mead nra/Colorado River-NV side.

* Timing... red flag criteria will likely be met as winds increase
across southern Nevada and northwest Arizona by late Thursday
afternoon ahead of an unseasonably strong area of low pressure.
Gusty winds will subside slightly and rh values may recover
briefly overnight to below criteria... but will easily meet
criteria again by late Friday morning.

* Wind... southwest to west 15 to 25 mph with gusts near 40 mph on
Thursday... and gusts up near 50 mph on Friday.

* Humidity... minimum values 9 to 15 percent.

* Impacts... the combination of gusty winds... low relative humidity
and dry fuels will create conditions that are favorable for
extreme fire behavior.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions
are either occurring or are imminent. A combination of strong
winds... low relative humidity... and warm temperatures will create
extreme fire growth potential.
