Wintry weather developed across the Central US on Presidents Day, as a low pressure system moved off the Rockies and into the Plains. This system pulled moisture in from the Gulf of Mexico, which allowed for rain showers to develop in the Southern Plains, with freezing rain and snow showers in the Northern and Central Plains. Winter weather advisories were issued for the Dakotas, as most areas saw 2 to 6 inches of new snowfall. A cold front extended southwestward from this system and brought light rain showers to Oklahoma and northern Texas. Strong winds developed along this frontal boundary with gusts from 50 to 60 mph. Strongest winds were reported at Guadalupe Pass, Texas at 60 mph. In eastern Colorado and western Kansas, strong winds and heavy snow caused white-out conditions. Blizzard advisories have been issued for the region as winds gusted from 40 to 50 mph. These areas saw dangerous road and travel conditions.

Ahead of this system in the East, a ridge of high pressure built over the Eastern US after a low pressure system pulled eastward and off the East Coast. This allowed for dry and cool conditions to return as it pushed in cool air from Canada. The Northeast and Ohio River Valley saw highs in the 30s, while the Southeast reached into the 50s and 60s.

Meanwhile, out West, a strong low pressure system in the Gulf of Alaska pushed another trough of low pressure over the Pacific Northwest. This triggered widespread scattered rain showers and high elevation snow showers over the Intermountain West throughout the day. Snowfall accumulation ranged from 2 to 5 inches across Idaho. A cold front associated with this system stretched southward through northern California and Nevada, which triggered light precipitation.
