Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Thursday, May 24, 2012.

Rain and thunderstorms will continue across parts of the Midwest and Central Plains on Thursday as low pressure forms along a cold front extending through the Central U.S. The heaviest amounts of rain are anticipated near the front in areas of northern Wisconsin, southern Minnesota and Iowa. There is a slight risk of severe storms for the Upper and Mid-Mississippi Valleys Thursday afternoon and night with damaging wind gusts and isolated tornadoes.

In the West, a strong storm system will drop southward from the Gulf of Alaska on Thursday. This system will lead to an increase in showers and possible thunderstorms across the Pacific Northwest and Northern Intermountain West. The colder airmass accompanying this system will lower snow levels in the mountains and cause temperatures to run about 10 degrees below normal for this time of year. Meanwhile, winds will pick up across the rest of the West, increasing fire danger potential across the Southwest and parts of southeastern Utah and southwestern Colorado.

In the East, light showers and afternoon thunderstorms will remain possible across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states. To the south, heavy rain and strong thunderstorms with gusty winds are expected to continue across the southern tip of Florida. Saturated grounds from heavy rainfall that occurred during the last couple of days combined with Thursday\'s rainfall will continue flood concerns near Miami-Dade County.

Fire Weather Warning
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 3:07 PM MDT on May 23, 2012

... Red flag warning remains in effect until 8 PM MST Thursday for
strong winds... low relative humidity and very high fire danger
for southern Gila County... the Tonto National Forest foothills...
and Maricopa and northern Pinal counties... including the greater
Phoenix metropolitan area...

... Red flag warning in effect from 11 am to 8 PM MST Friday
for strong winds... low relative humidity and very high fire danger
for southern Gila County... the Tonto National Forest foothills...
and Maricopa and northern Pinal counties... including the greater
Phoenix metropolitan area... ...

The National Weather Service in Phoenix has issued a red flag
warning for strong winds... low relative humidity and very high fire
danger... which is in effect from 11 am to 8 PM MST Friday. The Fire
Weather Watch has been upgraded and no longer is in effect.

* Affected area... in Arizona... south-central and southwest
deserts and southern Gila County/Tonto National Forest
foothills.

* Winds... south 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph.

* Timing... strong gusty winds are expected this afternoon and early
evening and will redevelop Thursday afternoon. Winds are expected
to pick up again on Friday afternoon.

* Relative humidity... as low as 7 percent. Humidities may improve
slightly overnight... however recoveries will generally remain
poor.

* Impacts... fuels are very dry... and fire danger is very high. These
conditions... combined with low relative humidity and strong
winds... will create widespread hazardous fire weather conditions
that may result in rapid fire growth and spread.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Please advise the appropriate officials and fire crews in the
field of this red flag warning.
