Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Friday, May 25, 2012.

Scattered thunderstorms persisted over the Central US on Friday, as a frontal boundary draped from the Midwest through the Rockies. This was a result of two areas of low pressure. One system moved over the Upper Midwest and into eastern Canada, while another moved eastward from the Central Rockies. This allowed for a frontal boundary to extend from the Great Lakes, over the Mid-Mississippi River Valley, and into the Central Plains. Scattered showers and thunderstorms developed along this frontal boundary. Some of these storms turned severe over Iowa and Nebraska with strong winds and large hail. Rainfall totals ranged from 1 to 2 inches across the Central US, with heaviest rainfall reported in Olathe, Kansas with a mid-day total of 2.13 inches of rain.

Behind this system, a low pressure system moved over northern California and into the Great Basin. This brought scattered rain showers to the Pacific Northwest, parts of northern California, and into the Intermountain West and Great Basin. Highest elevations saw overnight and early morning snow showers due to cool temperatures associated with this airmass. The southern side of this system created strong winds for the Southwest and Southern Rockies. Due to prevailing warm and dry conditions, fire danger remained high for these areas.

Special Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 4:40 PM CDT on May 25, 2012

Hot and humid conditions will continue across the natural state this
Holiday weekend... as high temperatures will climb into the lower to
mid 90s. Across eastern Arkansas... some locations may reach into the
upper 90s. While heat index values are not to expected to climb
above the century mark... the combination of high surface moisture
and abnormally warm temperatures will produce dangerous conditions
for anyone outdoors for prolonged periods during this Holiday
weekend.

People should be prepared to deal with the affects of this prolonged
period of hot weather. Follow the basic rules of heat safety to keep
from becoming overheated. Drink plenty of water... wear light
colored... light weight clothing... and avoid strenuous activities
during the hottest part of the day. Take frequent breaks and be sure
to put on sunscreen to limit the potential for sunburn. Make sure
pets have plenty of fresh water.

In addition... with abnormally dry conditions in place... there are
several counties under a burn ban. This includes much of north
central Arkansas. Caution should be exercised with any outdoor
burning this weekend.
