Weather Underground Forecast for Friday, February 10, 2012.

Expect active weather to move into the East on Friday, as a trough of low pressure moves from the Southern Plains and into the Eastern Valleys. Flow around this system will pull moisture and energy in from the Gulf of Mexico. This will produce scattered showers and thunderstorms over the Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi River Valley throughout the day. There is a slight chance that these storms will turn severe with strong winds and heavy downpours. The northern side of this system will push a cold front into the Midwest, which will move through the Great Lakes and into the Ohio River Valley. Expect light and scattered snow showers to develop along the front as it passes through northern Michigan and into the eastern Ohio Valley and the Central Appalachians. Warmer temperatures ahead of this system will allow for rain showers to develop in parts of the Mid-Atlantic states and the Tennessee Valley.

Out West, a weak trough of low pressure moves onshore from the Pacific Ocean, bringing some moisture onshore with it. This will produce more rain and high elevation snow showers over the Pacific Northwest. Some of this moisture will stretch southward into northern California, allowing for light rain and high elevation snow showers to spread into the northern Sierras.

The Flood Warning continues for
the White River at Augusta.
* Until further notice... or until the warning is cancelled.
* At 6:00 PM Thursday the stage was 30.3 feet.
* Minor flooding is occurring and minor flooding is forecast.
* Flood stage is 26.0 feet.
* Forecast... the river will continue rising to near 30.5 feet by
Saturday early afternoon.
* Impacts at 30.0 feet... thousands of acres of farm ground flooded. During
the growing season... could be a major agricultural disaster. County roads
on both sides of the river are flooded... including County Road 871 and
899.

... Some snow this morning... with more wintry precipitation on
Monday...

Light rain was falling across Arkansas early this morning.
However... there were pockets of light snow in northern Arkansas.
Some areas were reporting a dusting of snow in the north... but
roads were wet with temperatures above freezing.

Later today... rain will end... with a strong cold front to follow
from the northwest. The front will bring much colder air and breezy
conditions tonight and Saturday. Clouds will decrease as well.

Arctic high pressure will build into the region this weekend.
Well below normal temperatures are in the forecast... with perhaps
the coldest air of the winter thus far. High temperatures Saturday
and Sunday will only be in the 30s and 40s... with some 20s in
the northwest. Low temperatures by Sunday morning will only
be in the teens and lower 20s.

Heading into next week... it will remain cold on Monday as a
new storm system approaches from the Southern Plains. The system
will pull moisture northward from the Gulf Coast... and wintry
precipitation will break out.

As Monday begins... snow and sleet are expected in northern and
central Arkansas. In the southern counties... there may be a
combination of rain and freezing rain. The rush hour drive could
be tricky across much of the state.

As the day progresses... warmer air will try to overspread the
region from the south. Snow should continue toward the Missouri
border... with rain or snow in central sections and rain in the
south.

This could be a significant winter event in parts of the state.
The pattern is very complex... and forecast tweaks are likely
leading up to the event. Arkansans are advised to monitor
the forecast this weekend... and plan accordingly.
