... Preliminary results of Monroe County damage survey...

On Monday afternoon... meteorologists from the National Weather
Service in Memphis surveyed the damage from Monday morning/S
storms in Monroe County. The survey team found evidence of two
tornadoes.

The first tornado occurred southwest of Amory... and affected areas
south of Highway 278... near McAllister Road... and near little
coontail Road. Trees were uprooted and broken... and falling trees
damaged the roofs of several houses. This tornado will be rated
EF-0... with maximum winds estimated at 75 mph. South of the
track... an area of non-tornadic wind damage was noted.

The second tornado affected the community of Amory. Numerous large
trees were uprooted and broken... and light poles were bent. Falling
trees damaged the roofs of several houses... carports... and storage
sheds. Other homes had areas of shingles removed. The observed
damage supports a rating of EF-1... with maximum winds of
approximately 95 mph. However... other evidence may suggest a
rating in the lower EF-2 range. This evidence will be further
evaluated on Tuesday.

The team surveyed the damage in the Smithville area. Based on this
survey and interviews with eyewitnesses... it appears this damage
was caused by non-tornadic winds on the south side of the storm/S
area of rotation.

NWS meteorologists will continue their analysis of the damage
areas... and detailed information will appear in an updated report
that will be prepared on Tuesday.
