Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Saturday, February 11, 2012.

Precipitation will spread across the East Coast on Saturday, while more rain and mountain snow showers are anticipated for parts of the West. A trough of low pressure and associated cold front continue moving eastward across the Eastern Valleys into the Eastern Seaboard. Cool temperatures to the north will allow for snow showers to develop across the Northeast and New England, while rain showers are likely over the Mid-Atlantic states. Rain showers over the Southeastern states should wind down in the early morning hours as the tail end of the system pushes offshore early in the day. Expect the New York metropolitan area to see 1 to 3 inches of snow, while the Washington D.C. area will see a messy combination of snow and freezing rain as high temperatures reach into the lower 40s.

Behind this system, a ridge of high pressure continues to build in from the Plains, pushing cold and dry air in from Canada. This allows for plenty of sunshine to spread from the Plains over the Mississippi River Valley and into the Eastern Valleys. Expect the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest to see highs in the teens again, while the Midwest will see highs in the 20s. Strong winds will accompany this system, pushing windchill values below zero in these areas. The Southern Plains will remain in the 40s on Saturday.

Out West, a trough of low pressure pushes a cold front over the Pacific Northwest and continues pulling moisture onshore with it. This will kick up more rain showers with high elevation snow showers likely in the Cascades. The tail end of the frontal boundary will sweep through California, bringing light rain showers to the coasts and interior valleys. Expect light snow showers in the Sierra Nevadas by Saturday evening.

Wind Advisory, Hard Freeze Watch
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 4:39 AM CST on February 11, 2012

... Wind Advisory in effect from 9 am this morning to 6 PM CST
this evening...
... Hard freeze watch remains in effect from late tonight through
Sunday morning...

The National Weather Service in Birmingham has issued a Wind
Advisory... which is in effect from 9 am this morning to 6 PM CST
this evening.

The National Weather Service in Birmingham continues a hard
freeze watch... which is in effect from late tonight
through Sunday morning.

* Timing... windy conditions will start by this morning and last
until sunset. Cold temperatures are expected overnight into Sunday.

* Winds... sustained northerly wind of 15 to 25 mph with gusts
around 35 mph possible... especially across open lan areas... on open
waterways and in the higher elevations.

* Temperature... tonight into Sunday morning lows will drop
into the mid teens and lower 20s area wide. The coldest
locations will be across the north.

* Impacts... a few weaker tree limbs may break fall because of the
windy conditions. High profile vehicles should exercise extra
caution today. Due to the warmer temperatures in the area over
the past few weeks... many plants have already started blooming
and these temperatures could have devastating impacts to
vegetation. Below freezing temperatures may last as long as 24
hours north and 12 hours south.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A hard freeze watch means temperatures will be cold enough to
cause exposed pipes to freeze and possibly burst. Please take the
necessary precautions to protect any sensitive plants at your
home or business. Also... take the time to protect exposed pipes
from the cold.

A Wind Advisory means that sustained winds of 24 mph and higher...
or wind gusts of 36 mph and higher... are expected. Winds this
strong can make driving difficult... especially for high profile
vehicles. Use extra caution.

Fire Weather Warning
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 5:41 AM CST on February 11, 2012

... Red flag warning in effect from 11 am to 6 PM CST Sunday for
all of central Alabama...

The National Weather Service in Birmingham has issued a red flag
warning... which is in effect from 11 am to 6 PM CST Sunday. The
Fire Weather Watch is no longer in effect.

* Winds... northwest 5 to 10 mph with gusts up to 15 mph.

* Relative humidity... as low as 17 percent.

* Impacts... the combination of a dry airmass and windy
conditions will result in critical fire weather conditions.
Outdoor burning is not recommended.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions
are either occurring now... or will shortly. A combination of
strong winds... low relative humidity... and warm temperatures will
create explosive fire growth potential.

For additional information on the fire conditions... please
contact the Alabama forestry commission at
www.Forestry.Alabama.Gov.
