Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Saturday, February 11, 2012.

Precipitation will spread across the East Coast on Saturday, while more rain and mountain snow showers are anticipated for parts of the West. A trough of low pressure and associated cold front continue moving eastward across the Eastern Valleys into the Eastern Seaboard. Cool temperatures to the north will allow for snow showers to develop across the Northeast and New England, while rain showers are likely over the Mid-Atlantic states. Rain showers over the Southeastern states should wind down in the early morning hours as the tail end of the system pushes offshore early in the day. Expect the New York metropolitan area to see 1 to 3 inches of snow, while the Washington D.C. area will see a messy combination of snow and freezing rain as high temperatures reach into the lower 40s.

Behind this system, a ridge of high pressure continues to build in from the Plains, pushing cold and dry air in from Canada. This allows for plenty of sunshine to spread from the Plains over the Mississippi River Valley and into the Eastern Valleys. Expect the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest to see highs in the teens again, while the Midwest will see highs in the 20s. Strong winds will accompany this system, pushing windchill values below zero in these areas. The Southern Plains will remain in the 40s on Saturday.

Out West, a trough of low pressure pushes a cold front over the Pacific Northwest and continues pulling moisture onshore with it. This will kick up more rain showers with high elevation snow showers likely in the Cascades. The tail end of the frontal boundary will sweep through California, bringing light rain showers to the coasts and interior valleys. Expect light snow showers in the Sierra Nevadas by Saturday evening.

Hard Freeze Watch
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 11:36 PM CST on February 10, 2012

... Hard freeze watch remains in effect from late Saturday night
through Sunday morning...

* timing... Sunday between midnight and 8 am for temperatures
near 20 or possibly below 20.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A hard freeze watch means there is a significant risk
temperatures will fall to near 20 degrees or lower Saturday night
into Sunday morning. These conditions could kill crops and other
cold sensitive vegetation. Check on elderly neighbors to make
sure they have adequate heat. Area shelters should make
preparations for extra demand. Pets and livestock should be
protected.

All should take adequate safety precautions with heating systems.
Use Carbon monoxide detectors in enclosed spaces. Extra caution
should be used with portable space heaters. Make sure they are
not left unattended and are not used near flammable materials
such as curtains or bed coverings. Listen to NOAA Weather Radio
or your local news media outlets for later updates on the
developing cold weather situation over the next day or two.

Temperatures such as these especially after a prolonged warm
period can bring on complacency. Remember sensitive plants...
exposed water pipes... and water cooled engines needing
antifreeze.

Fire Weather Watch
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 2:12 PM CST on February 10, 2012

... Fire Weather Watch remains in effect from Sunday morning
through Sunday afternoon for south central and southwest Alabama
due to risk of long duration of low relative humidity below 25
percent...

* affected area... fire weather zones 051... 052... 053... 054...
055... 056... 057... 058... 059... 060... 061... 062... 063 and 064.

* Humidity... lowering to below 15 percent on Sunday.

* Impacts... any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly.
Outdoor burning is not recommended.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Fire Weather Watch means that critical fire weather conditions
are forecast to occur. Listen for later fire weather forecasts
and possible red flag warnings.
