Statement as of 2:24 PM CST on December 24, 2009 ... Wind Advisory now in effect until 3 am CST Friday... The Wind Advisory is now in effect until 3 am CST Friday. A strong low pressure system just to the west of Alabama has caused a tight pressure gradient across central Alabama. This tight gradient has already produced sustained winds between 20 and 30 mph with gusts of 35 to 45 mph... and some wind gusts of up to 50 mph at higher elevations. These winds should begin to subside after midnight... but will remain within Wind Advisory criteria through 3 am. High volumes of traffic are expected across area roadways this evening. Those traveling on east to west oriented roads and bridges could encounter strong cross winds. High profile vehicles should take extra caution. Other concerns include any loose yard furniture... trash cans and Holiday decorations that will easily be blown around if not properly secured... as well as the chance of power outages if downed trees happen to fall on power lines. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A Wind Advisory means that sustained winds of 17 mph and higher... or wind gusts of 30 mph and higher... are expected. Winds this strong can make driving difficult... especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution. 27 |
