    Public Information Statement

Statement as of 6:15 PM CDT on May 9, 2008

... National Weather Service survey teams find straight line wind
damage and at least two tornadoes...

Early Friday... teams of National Weather Service meteorologists
surveyed areas of significant storm damage as a result of the severe
weather that occurred on Thursday, may 8th, 2008. The updated
    findings are listed below.

    ... Montgomery County...

The National Weather Service has surveyed damage in the city of
Montgomery... and concluded that the damage was caused by straight
    line thunderstorm winds.

The area of damage began around the Rosemont estates area of
Montgomery and extended about seven miles southeastward along
Highway 231. The most concentrated area of damage was near the
Montgomery mall... at highways 80 and 231. In this area... wind speeds
were estimated at near 100 mph. Damage included partially removed
roofs from several units at an apartment complex... downed power
poles... and several extensively damaged billboards. Elsewhere along
the path... winds were estimated to be between 60 and 80 mph... and
caused numerous trees to be snapped or uprooted. The area of damage
was approximately 3 miles wide at its widest point. No injuries or
fatalities were reported with this storm system.

... Kansas tornado (fayette and Walker counties)...

A National Weather Service survey team found a 10.6 mile long... EF-1
tornado damage path in northeastern Fayette County into northwestern
Walker County. The tornado initially touched down approximately two
and one-half miles southwest of the Bazemore community... in Fayette
County... or one mile north of the intersection of County Road 50 and
Alabama Highway 129. From there it moved east-northeasward...
crossing into Walker County near Barron creek at Alabama Highway 13.
The tornado caused additional damage in the Kansas community... but
no damage was found beyond Kansas. Wind speeds associated with this
tornado were estimated to be around 100 mph in both Fayette and
Walker counties... with a maximum width of 100 yards in Fayette
County and 50 yards in Walker County.

... Smith Lake tornado (walker county)...

A second tornado damage path was found in the northeastern portion
of Walker County. This tornado touched down on Blooming Grove Road,
about six tenths of a mile south of CR-43. From there the tornado
moved almost due east... across Smith Lake... and into Cullman
County. Along its path in Walker County... the tornado blew down or
snapped off hundreds of trees... damaged or destroyed at least 5
Chicken houses... and destroyed at least 5 boat houses at the euskin
point Marina on Smith Lake. The path in Walker County was about 2.5
miles long and 600 yards wide... with winds estimated around 105 mph.
The tornado was rated an EF-1 in Walker County. The rating for the
entire tornado depends on storm survey findings in Cullman County...
being conducted by the huntville NWS office.

The National Weather Service greatly appreciates all the storm
reports received from our partners and customers across central
Alabama. The Success of our warnings is highly dependent on accurate
storm reports... which we evaluate to gain a better understanding of
severe weather across central Alabama. If there are any other
locations that may have received any damaging winds... hail... or
tornadoes from this event... please contact your local emergency
management office... or call our storm reporting hotline
    at... 1-800-856-0758.
