Statement as of 3:29 PM CST on November 10, 2009 The National Weather Service in Birmingham has issued a * Flood Warning for urban areas and small streams in... Bibb County in central Alabama... Blount County in central Alabama... Chilton County in central Alabama... eastern Jefferson County in central Alabama... northern Perry County in central Alabama... Shelby County in central Alabama... St. Clair County in central Alabama... Calhoun County in east central Alabama... northwestern Coosa County in east central Alabama... Talladega County in east central Alabama... Cherokee County in northeast Alabama... Etowah County in northeast Alabama... east central Hale County in west central Alabama... * until 630 PM CST * at 326 PM CST a band of heavy rainfall... associated with the remnants of Tropical Depression Ida... was moving across central Alabama. This band of rain will produce up to another inch to inch and a half of rain in areas that have already received up to 3 inches of rain during the past 24 hours. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A Flood Warning means flooding is occurring or is imminent. Most flood related deaths occur in automobiles. Do not attempt to cross water covered bridges... dips... or low water crossings. The Flood Warning remains in effect until 430 PM CST for urban areas and small streams in southern Blount... southeastern Walker... northern St. Clair... Jefferson... eastern Tuscaloosa... northwestern Shelby... northwestern Bibb and northern Hale counties... At 233 PM CST... tropical rains continue falling across parts of central Alabama. The tropical system Ida has become an extratropical system... but additional light to moderate rain will fall for several more hours. Radar estimates that 2 to 4 inches of rain have already fallen across the warned area... and another 1.5 inches of rain is possible this afternoon. Ponding of water in low lying areas and stream rises are likely... and some flooding may occur. A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or has been reported. Stream rises will be slow and flash flooding is not expected. However... all interested parties should take necessary precautions immediately. Most flood deaths occur in automobiles. Never drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway. Flood waters are usually deeper than they appear. Just one foot of flowing water is powerful enough to sweep vehicles off the Road. When encountering flooded roads make the smart choice... turn around... dont drown. The Flood Watch is now in effect for * portions of central Alabama... east central Alabama... northeast Alabama and west central Alabama... including the following areas... in central Alabama... Autauga... Bibb... Blount... Chilton... Coosa... Elmore... Jefferson... Perry... Shelby... St. Clair and Talladega. In east central Alabama... Calhoun... Chambers... Clay... Cleburne... Lee... Macon... Randolph... Russell and Tallapoosa. In northeast Alabama... Cherokee and Etowah. In west central Alabama... Hale and Tuscaloosa. * Until 9 PM CST this evening * locally heavy rain will be possible across parts of central Alabama this evening as the remnants of tropical system Ida across the area. Radar estimates that 2 to 4 inches of rain have already fallen across the watch area... and another 1.5 inches of rain is possible this evening. Ponding of water in low lying areas and stream rises are likely... and some flooding may occur. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on current forecasts. You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible flood warnings. Statement as of 2:48 PM CST on November 10, 2009 ... Wind Advisory now in effect until midnight CST tonight... The Wind Advisory is now in effect until midnight CST tonight. East to northeast winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 35 mph will be possible. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A Wind Advisory means that sustained winds more than 20 mph... or wind gusts greater than 30 mph... are expected. Winds this strong can make driving difficult... especially for high profile vehicles driving in a north or south direction. A few tree limbs or weaker smaller trees may fall due to these winds. Please exercise extra caution. |
