Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Saturday, February 11, 2012.

Precipitation will spread across the East Coast on Saturday, while more rain and mountain snow showers are anticipated for parts of the West. A trough of low pressure and associated cold front continue moving eastward across the Eastern Valleys into the Eastern Seaboard. Cool temperatures to the north will allow for snow showers to develop across the Northeast and New England, while rain showers are likely over the Mid-Atlantic states. Rain showers over the Southeastern states should wind down in the early morning hours as the tail end of the system pushes offshore early in the day. Expect the New York metropolitan area to see 1 to 3 inches of snow, while the Washington D.C. area will see a messy combination of snow and freezing rain as high temperatures reach into the lower 40s.

Behind this system, a ridge of high pressure continues to build in from the Plains, pushing cold and dry air in from Canada. This allows for plenty of sunshine to spread from the Plains over the Mississippi River Valley and into the Eastern Valleys. Expect the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest to see highs in the teens again, while the Midwest will see highs in the 20s. Strong winds will accompany this system, pushing windchill values below zero in these areas. The Southern Plains will remain in the 40s on Saturday.

Out West, a trough of low pressure pushes a cold front over the Pacific Northwest and continues pulling moisture onshore with it. This will kick up more rain showers with high elevation snow showers likely in the Cascades. The tail end of the frontal boundary will sweep through California, bringing light rain showers to the coasts and interior valleys. Expect light snow showers in the Sierra Nevadas by Saturday evening.

Hard Freeze Warning, Wind Advisory
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 3:36 PM CST on February 11, 2012

... Wind Advisory remains in effect until 5 PM CST this
afternoon...
... Hard freeze warning remains in effect from midnight tonight to
8 am CST Sunday...

* timing... wind gusts in excess of 25 mph will continue through 5 PM
CST this afternoon. Between midnight and 8 am CST Sunday
temperatures will fall well below freezing.

* Winds... 20 to 25 mph with frequent gusts up to around 30 mph likely.

* Temperature... lower 20s over entire region... some upper teens
possible in the northwest as well as at other locations that are
normally colder than most surrounding areas.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A hard freeze warning means temperatures 20 degrees or lower are
imminent or highly likely. During this period of unusually cold
weather... check on elderly neighbors to make sure they have
adequate heat. Outdoor pets should also have adequate warmth.
Area shelters should continue to expect increased demand.

Everyone should take adequate safety precautions with their
heating systems... and make sure to utilize Carbon monoxide
detectors in enclosed spaces. Extra caution should be used with
portable space heaters. Make sure space heaters are not left
unattended and are not used near flammable materials such as
curtains or bed coverings. Open the faucet slightly for a small
stream of water overnight if you have any exterior open air
piping. Damage likely to any early new growth of sensitive
vegetation left unprotected. Listen to NOAA Weather Radio or your
local news media outlets for continuing updates on the cold
weather.

A Wind Advisory means that winds of 25 to 39 mph are expected.
Winds this strong can make driving difficult... especially for
high profile vehicles. Use extra caution.

Fire Weather Warning
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 3:23 PM CST on February 11, 2012

... Red flag warning remains in effect from 10 am to 6 PM CST
Sunday for south central and southwest Alabama for long duration of
low relative humidity below 25 percent...

* humidity... lowering to below 15 percent on Sunday.

* Impacts... any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly.
Outdoor burning is not recommended.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A red flag warning means that dangerous fire weather conditions
are either occurring now... or likely will occur. A combination of
low relative humidity and temperature will risk explosive
fire growth potential.
