Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Sunday, February 12, 2012.

The East dries out on Sunday, but wet weather continues moving through the West. A trough of low pressure advances eastward over the Great Basin and Central Rockies, producing moderate snow showers over Utah and Colorado. Winter weather advisories have been issued for parts of western Colorado as snowfall accumulations may reach from 6 to 8 inches by Sunday evening. Most of Utah, western Wyoming, and northern New Mexico should see lighter snow showers with accumulation around 1 to 2 inches. The tail end of this trough will extend into western Texas, bringing snow and freezing rain showers into northwestern Texas. Precipitation from this system will move into the Texas Panhandle late Sunday into Monday morning. Winter storm warnings have been issued for the region as 3 to 5 inches of snow are possible, with ice accumulations from 0.10 to 0.30 inches by Sunday evening. This will cause dangerous roads and travel conditions.

Meanwhile, another trough of low pressure and associated cold front approach the West Coast on Sunday. This system will reach the coasts of the Pacific Northwest and northern California in the afternoon and evening hours, bringing more rain showers. Temperatures will remain cool over most of the West Coast as this system pushes clouds and moisture onshore.

In the East, a strong ridge of high pressure allows for dry, sunny, and cool weather to persist. This system creates strong flow from the north, pushing cold air into the Plains and Eastern Valleys. Expect highs to range in the 20s in the Midwest, while the Ohio River Valley and Tennessee Valleys will see highs in the 30s. Freeze advisories have been issued for the Gulf states as low temperatures will drop into the 20s Sunday night. Dangerous fire conditions spread over the Southeastern states due to high pressure creating a very dry airmas with strong winds.

Hard Freeze Warning
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 11:51 PM CST on February 11, 2012

... Hard freeze warning remains in effect until 8 am CST Sunday...

* timing... through 8 am CST Sunday temperatures will fall well below
freezing.

* Temperature... lower twenties over entire region... some upper
teens possible well inland and at other normally colder
locations.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Everyone should take adequate safety precautions with their
heating systems... and make sure to utilize Carbon monoxide
detectors in enclosed spaces. Extra caution should be used with
portable space heaters. Make sure space heaters are not left
unattended and are not used near flammable materials such as
curtains or bed coverings. Open the faucet slightly for a small
stream of water overnight if you have any exterior open air
piping. Damage likely to any early new growth of sensitive
vegetation left unprotected. Listen to NOAA Weather Radio or your
local news media outlets for continuing updates on the cold
weather.

A hard freeze warning means temperatures 20 degrees or lower are
imminent or highly likely. During this period of unusually cold
weather... check on elderly neighbors to make sure they have
adequate heat. Outdoor pets should also have adequate warmth.
Area shelters should continue to expect increased demand.

Fire Weather Warning, Fire Weather Watch
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 6:01 PM CST on February 11, 2012

... Red flag warning remains in effect from 10 am to 6 PM CST
Sunday for southwest and south central Alabama for long duration of
low relative humidities below 25 percent...
... Fire Weather Watch remains in effect Monday afternoon for south
central and a portion of southwest Alabama for marginally long duration
of relative humidities below 25 percent...

The National Weather Service in Mobile has issued a Fire Weather
Watch... which is in effect Monday afternoon.

* Humidity... lowering to below 15 percent on Sunday and below 25
percent Monday afternoon.

* Impacts... any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly.
Outdoor burning is not recommended.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A red flag warning means that dangerous fire weather conditions
are either occurring now... or likely will occur. A combination of
low relative humidity and temperature will risk explosive fire
growth potential.

A Fire Weather Watch means that critical fire weather conditions
are forecast to occur. Listen for later forecasts and possible
red flag warnings.
