Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Saturday, February 11, 2012.

Cold air poured into the Plains on Saturday, while snow showers developed in parts of the Northeast. A strong low pressure system that brought heavy rain to the Southern Plains and Southeast has advanced eastward and off the East Coast into the Atlantic Ocean. However, counter-clockwise flow around this system continued to push moisture into the Northeast, Great Lakes, and Ohio River Valley. In addition to cool air over the region, this allowed for snow showers to develop across Michigan and the Ohio River Valley. Snowfall accumulations ranged from 1 to 3 inches in most areas, with up to 5 inches at higher elevations of the Central Appalachians. Coastal regions remained slightly warmer, which maintained light rain showers from southern Maine through Virginia.

Behind this system, a dominant ridge of high pressure continued to build over the Plains. This system started to stretch eastward over the Mississippi Valley. Flow around this system pulled cold air in from central Canada and kept seasonable cool temperatures over the Central US. High temperatures only reached into the 30s in parts of northern Texas, while the Central and Northern Plains saw highs in the teens, with overnight lows in the negative teens.

Out West, cool conditions persisted with areas of wet weather as a trough of low pressure moved over the Pacific Northwest and into the Intermountain West and Great Basin. Rainfall totals and high elevation snow accumulation remained light. A few light rain showers extended into California as moist onshore flow persisted.

Hard Freeze Warning
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 6:16 PM CST on February 11, 2012

... Hard freeze warning remains in effect from midnight tonight to
9 am CST Sunday...
... Wind Advisory has expired...

The National Weather Service in Birmingham has issued a hard
freeze warning... which is in effect from midnight tonight to 9 am
CST Sunday.

* Temperature... tonight into Sunday morning lows will drop into
the mid teens and lower 20s area wide. The coldest locations
will be across the north.

* Impacts... due to the warmer temperatures in the area over the
past few weeks... many plants have already started blooming and
these temperatures could have devastating impacts to vegetation.
Below freezing temperatures may last as long as 24 hours north
and 12 hours south.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A hard freeze warning means temperatures will be cold enough to
cause exposed pipes to freeze and possibly burst. Please take the
necessary precautions to protect any sensitive plants at your
home or business. Also... take the time to protect exposed pipes
from the cold.

Fire Weather Warning
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 6:09 PM CST on February 11, 2012

... Red flag warning remains in effect from 11 am to 6 PM CST
Sunday for all of central Alabama...

A red flag warning remains in effect from 11 am to 6 PM CST
Sunday.

* Winds... northwest 5 to 10 mph.

* Relative humidity... as low as 15 percent.

* Impacts... the combination of a dry airmass and windy
conditions will result in critical fire weather conditions.
Outdoor burning is not recommended.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions
are either occurring now... or will shortly. A combination of
strong winds... low relative humidity... and warm temperatures will
create explosive fire growth potential.

For additional information on the fire conditions... please
contact the Alabama forestry commission at
www.Forestry.Alabama.Gov.
