... Wind Advisory in effect from 6 am Thursday to midnight CST Thursday night...
The National Weather Service in Birmingham has issued a Wind Advisory... which is in effect from 6 am Thursday to midnight CST Thursday night.
A strengthening low pressure system to the west of Alabama will cause a tight pressure gradient across central Alabama on Thursday. This tight gradient will initially create sustained winds between 10 and 15 mph with higher gusts beginning by 6 am Thursday. Sustained winds will increase to 20 to 25 mph by noon on Thursday with gusts of 35 to 40 mph lasting through midnight Friday.
The biggest concern with these winds is the fact that they are going to on Christmas eve. High volumes of traffic could be impacted... especially traffic on west-to-east oriented roads as high profile vehicle could be presented with strong cross winds.
Other concerns include any loose yard furniture... trash cans and Holiday decorations that will easily be blown around if not properly secured... as well as the chance of power outages if downed trees happen to fall on power lines.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A Wind Advisory means that sustained winds of 17 mph and higher... or wind gusts of 30 mph and higher... are expected. Winds this strong can make driving difficult... especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution.
