Statement as of 4:39 AM AKST on November 14, 2009 ... High surf advisory remains in effect until 6 am akst Sunday... A high surf advisory remains in effect until 6 am akst Sunday. North winds 35 to 45 mph on will be blowing over Bering Strait and Saint Lawrence Island today and begin to decrease some overnight tonight. On Sunday... north winds are expected to have diminished to 20 to 30 mph. Waves in the open ocean will build to 13 ft today. Portions of the coasts of Saint Lawrence Island and the Bering Strait are protected by first-year sea ice... while other areas are not. Heavy surf is expected on beaches exposed to the northerly winds and some beach erosion is likely. This rough weather will be accompanied by some heavy snow showers over Saint Lawrence Island today. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A high surf advisory means that localized beach erosion is expected. Precautions should be taken to protect property.
