Weather Underground Forecast for Saturday, May 18, 2013.

A strong low pressure system will bring active weather to the center of the nation on Saturday. The system will move off the Rockies and into the Plains, which will push a warm front into the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest, while it continues pulling a cold front southeastward across the Western states. Counter clockwise flow around this system will pull more moisture and energy into the Plains from the Gulf of Mexico, allowing for showers and thunderstorms to develop from Oklahoma through the Dakotas and into Minnesota. These areas are under a slight threat of severe weather development with strong winds, large hail, and heavy rainfall. Parts of western Nebraska and northwestern Kansas are under a moderate risk of severe thunderstorm development. This area has increased risk for tornado development on Saturday.

East of this activity, a weak trough slowly moves over the Eastern Valleys, allowing for a few more widespread showers and thunderstorms to pop up from the Southern Appalachians through the Mid-Atlantic states. Meanwhile in the West, moisture from the Pacific Ocean will allow for scattered showers with afternoon thunderstorms to persist for the Northern and Central Rockies. Severe storms are not likely in these areas. In the Southwest, gusty winds, warm temperatures, and dry conditions will maintain dangerous fire weather conditions on Saturday.

... Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until noon akdt
Saturday above 1500 feet elevation...

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow... blowing snow remains in
effect until noon akdt Saturday.

* Location... above 1500 feet elevation.

* Snow... 2 to 4 inches through Saturday morning for a storm
total accumulation of 3 to 6 inches. At lower elevations 1 to
2 inches of accumulation is expected with some of the snow
melting as it hits the ground.

* Visibility... snow and blowing snow may reduce visibility to
one half mile at times... especially at higher elevations.

* Timing... snow will continue into Saturday afternoon and
diminish by evening.

* Impacts... visibility will be reduced. Snow will accumulate
into drifts at higher elevations. Travel and outdoor
activities will be difficult.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Weather Advisory means that one or more winter weather
hazards are expected to cause travel difficulties.





Areal Flood Advisory

... Flood Advisory in effect until 1000 PM akdt Saturday for the
Tanana river in Salcha...

The National Weather Service in Fairbanks has extended the

* Flood Advisory for ice jam flooding the Tanana river in Salcha

* until 1000 PM akdt Saturday

* an ice jam remains in place on the Tanana river approximately
1/2 mile downstream of the boondox bar in Salcha.

* The Tanana river is flowing overbank in the vicinity of the
boondox bar in Salcha. Salcha Rescue reports flooding continues on
the south end of the old Richardson Highway and the Road is
impassable. Minor flooding is impacting several residential yards
and has surrounded at least one home in the area. Flooding is not
impacting the main Richardson Highway.

Water levels have been fluctuating by several feet and will c
continue as additional ice moves down the Tanana river and hangs
up behind the ice jam. At this time the Tanana river is not
flowing into piledriver Slough. Residents near the boondox bar and
along the old Richardson Highway are encouraged to monitor the
level of the Tanana river and piledriver Slough. Flooding will
likely persist until the ice jam releases.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross
safely. Move to higher ground.

A new record low temperature of 18 degrees was set at Bettles
Friday morning. This replaces the previous record low temperature
for 17 may of 23 degrees set in 1992.

The maximum temperature Friday of 35 degrees at Bettles tied the
record low maximum temperature for 17 may set in 1964.
