Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Wednesday, May 22, 2013.

After an active severe weather pattern during the beginning of the week, cooler and relatively calmer weather conditions will return to much of the Central U.S. on Wednesday as the trough of low pressure impacting the region moves to the East. As the trough progresses, an associated low pressure system will reorganize near southern Lake Michigan and will continue northeastward across Michigan toward the Lower Great Lakes through Wednesday evening. Expect rain showers to continue across the Upper Midwest into areas of the inland Northeast throughout this transition. Meanwhile, the system's associated cold front will trail southwestward from the low across the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys through the Lower Mississippi Valley and into the Southern Plains. Favorable energy and environmental conditions ahead of the cold front combined with ample moisture from the Gulf of Mexico will set the stage for shower and thunderstorm activity through the day. Areas just east of the advancing cold front will experience the heaviest amounts of precipitation, with areas of flooding and flash flooding possible in parts of eastern Texas and Louisiana. As the cold front continues eastward, areas of the Lower Great Lakes into the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys are at slight risk of severe thunderstorm development through the evening. Severe storms in these regions may become capable of producing damaging wind gusts, marginally severe hail, and even a few tornadoes during the evening hours.

Elsewhere, scattered showers and thunderstorms will remain possible along the East Coast and in the Florida Peninsula. Out West, a cold trough of low pressure will become anchored over the Pacific Northwest, bringing cool, below normal temperatures to the Pacific Northwest and California, as well as scattered precipitation to the Northwest.

Areal Flood Warning
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 3:26 PM AKDT on May 21, 2013

... Flood Warning in effect until 1000 am akdt Thursday for the Yukon
river at Fort Yukon... .

The National Weather Service in Fairbanks has extended the

* Flood Warning for the Yukon river at Fort Yukon

* until 1000 am akdt Thursday

* the ice jam 12 miles upstream of Fort Yukon is continuing to block
the river and is causing a lake to form upstream of Fort Yukon.
This lake is estimated to be up to 7 miles wide and more than 30
miles long. If the ice jam breaks suddenly it will cause a rush of
ice and water and cause sudden flooding similar to a dam break. If
the jam holds in place long enough it may slowly release the
upstream water... but with increased snow melt that does not
seem likely. Fort Yukon is currently flooded in low lying areas on
the west side of town including The Ball field... the Old Tank
farm... several homes... the area around the tribal Hall and one
runway apron at the Airport.

* Major flooding throughout the town of Fort Yukon is expected to
develop between now and Thursday morning. While fluctuations
in river levels are occurring... the real danger if from the
ice jam upstream of Fort Yukon that remains in place. When the ice
jam upstream breaks the water level will rise rapidly and will
push water and ice into Fort Yukon causing major flooding. This is
a dangerous situation.

Residents should act now to protect lives and property. People
should move to higher ground and have supplies to last at least
several days. They should monitor the situation and continue to be
alert for rapid changes in river conditions.

Areal Flood Watch
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 6:49 PM AKDT on May 21, 2013

... Flood Watch remains in effect through Friday afternoon for
the Yukon river from Beaver to Rampart...

The Flood Watch continues for

* the Yukon river from Beaver to Rampart.

* Through Friday afternoon

* the breakup front on the upper Yukon river was located just
upstream from Fort Yukon Tuesday afternoon. The surge of water
and ice associated with this breakup front caused major
flooding in Circle Sunday and similar flooding is expected in
Fort Yukon tonight or Wednesday. The front is expected to
continue downriver to Beaver... Stevens Village... and Rampart.
The river watch team has determined that the ice from Fort
Yukon to Stevens Village appears to be deteriorating... arched
and lifting.

* If ice jams form as the break up front moves past then water
levels could rise rapidly and flooding could occur at Beaver...
Stevens Village... and Rampart through Friday.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts.

Residents living downstream of Fort Yukon should monitor
conditions and take precautions early to protect life and
property. Water levels can rise very quickly when an ice jam
occurs downstream of a community.

You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible
flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be
prepared to take action should flooding develop.
