Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Monday, February 13, 2012. A storm raced out of the Rockies and into the Plains on Monday, producing a good shot of Winter weather in the Plains and Mississippi Valley. Winter Weather Advisories were posted from eastern Oklahoma through the western Tennessee Valley in anticipation of several inches of new snow. Snow fell as far north as Minnesota and Michigan, but lighter snow was reported the farther north you went. In the warmer air closer to the Gulf Coast, rain fell in Louisiana and Mississippi.

Wet weather also greeted the West Coast as a Pacific storm slammed into California. This storm lacked a tremendous amount of moisture, but it has been a very dry Winter for the state thus far, and any precipitation is very much welcomed. Up to a foot of new snow is possible from this storm in the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevadas when all is said and done.

The East Coast was dry as a high pressure continued to dominate, but the region experienced another chilly day. By the afternoon, temperatures were still in the 20s and 30s for many areas in New England, while temperatures in the 30s were experience as far south as Arkansas. Morning temperatures were in the 20s in northern Florida.

The Northern Plains rose into the 20s and 30s, while the Northwest saw temperatures in the 30s and 40s. The Southwest rose into the 40s, 50s, and some 60s.

Public Information Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 4:52 PM AKST on February 13, 2012

... February off to a very mild start at Fairbanks...
... Wild temperature swings the norm this winter...

In sharp contrast to the coldest January in over 40 years this
February has gotten off to a very mild start at Fairbanks. Ten of
the first 12 days of the month have had an average temperature
above normal. Six of the first 12 days have had a high temperature
of 25 degrees or warmer. So far this month the average temperature
of 4.7 degrees is 9 degrees above normal. It has been the warmest
start to February since 2007.

So far this winter has been characterized by wild swings of either
well above or well below normal temperatures. We eased into winter
with above normal temperatures much of the time into mid November
before one of the coldest early season cold snaps affected the
area prior to Thanksgiving. A warm spell lasted much of the month
of December until just before Christmas when temperatures once
again turned cold. The cold weather with well below normal
temperatures persisted throughout the month of January. As soon
as February began the weather pattern again changed... this time
to well above normal temperatures which have so far persisted into
the first half of February.

Temperatures during the next week are expected to average above
normal. There are some long range indications that another pattern
change to below normal temperatures may develop toward the end of
February or early March... but this is still a long way out and
remains highly uncertain... but based on the wild extremes
experienced so far this winter it would certainly not be out of
character for the winter of 2011-2012.
