Severe Thunderstorm Warning
Statement as of 6:43 PM CDT on July 12, 2009
... A Severe Thunderstorm Warning remains in effect until 700 PM CDT
for east central Jefferson and northeastern Shelby counties...
At 642 PM CDT... National Weather Service continued to detect a severe
thunderstorm capable of producing penny size hail... and damaging
winds in excess of 60 mph. This storm was located near Barber
motorsports park... or near Leeds... moving southeast at 10 mph.
Other locations in the warning include but are not limited to Goat
Island at Lake Purdy... Lake Purdy... Vandiver... Sterrett... Mount
Laurel... Highland Lakes... Greystone and Fowler Lake.
This includes...
Interstate 459 exit numbers 23 through 33
Interstate 20 exit numbers 129 through 140
Interstate 59 exit numbers 130 through 137.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
In addition to large hail and damaging winds... continuous cloud to
ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Move indoors
immediately! Lightning is one of natures number one killers.

The National Weather Service in Birmingham has issued an
* urban and small stream flood advisory for...
east central Jefferson County in central Alabama...
this includes the cities of... Trussville... Leeds...
* until 815 PM CDT
* at 614 PM CDT heavy rainfall continues to fall across eastern
Jefferson County. Radar estimates of 2 to 3 inches have fallen
within the past hour with another one inch possible through 7 PM.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause elevated levels on
small creeks and streams... and ponding of water in urban areas...
highways... streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage
areas and low lying spots.
