Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Friday, May 25, 2012.

Expect more active weather to develop across the Great Lakes on Friday, as a low pressure system moves from the Upper Midwest into eastern Canada. This system will push a cold front over the Great Lakes and Midwest, producing scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout the day. There is a slight chance that some of these storms will turn severe with strong winds and large hail. Rainfall totals will range from 1 to 2 inches, with over 2 inches likely in areas of severe weather development.

Behind this activity in the West, a low pressure system will move over the Great Basin and into the Southern Rockies. Flow around this system will produce cooler temperatures across the West, while also triggering scattered showers over the Pacific Northwest, northern California, and Intermountain West. Snow showers may develop again across the highest elevations of the Northern Rockies.

Meanwhile in the East, high pressure builds from the Plains, over the Mississippi River Valley, and into the Eastern US. This will keep moisture away to the north, allowing for dry, sunny, and warm conditions. High temperatures will range in the 80s and 90s from the Central Plains through the Eastern Valleys, with parts of the Southern US reaching into the lower 100s.

Dense Smoke Advisory
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 5:18 AM EDT on May 25, 2012

... Dense smoke advisory remains in effect until 9 am EDT this
morning...

* locations: portions of southern Berkeley County and the
Charleston Metro area... including North Charleston... downtown
Charleston... west Ashley... Daniel Island and Mount Pleasant.

* Visibilities: areas of dense smoke will reduce visibilities to
less than 1/4 mile at times.

* Timing: the worst visibilities will occur through sunrise. The
smoke should lift by 9 am leading to improved visibilities.

* Impacts: the air quality will be hazardous. Avoid strenuous
activities if you must work outdoors this morning. Motorists
should be alert for sudden changes in visibilities. Use low
beam headlights whenever dense smoke is encountered.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A dense smoke advisory means fires will create smoke thick enough
to greatly reduce visibilities. Motorists should drive with
caution and allow for extra travel time. Use low beam headlights
and reduce driving speeds. Leave plenty of distance ahead of you
in case a sudden stop is needed. Follow instructions of traffic
control authorities.

Public Information Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 5:00 am EDT on May 25, 2012

... The safe boating topic for today is dangerous waves on the
ocean...

Each year boaters encounter waves that cause a significant damage
to their vessels... or results in the boat sinking and loss of life.
To keep all boaters safe... you need to understand how waves are
formed... when they can become steep... and the type of wave
conditions that each vessel can handle.

Wind creates waves and they are influenced by size and duration of
the wind fetch. Waves that are generated locally are called wind
waves... and those that are generated at a distant fetch are called
swells. These waves are further modified by currents... refraction
and shoaling.

Refraction is the bending of waves because of varying water depths
underneath.

Shoaling occurs as the waves enter shallower water. The wave speed
and wave length decrease in shallow water... therefore... the energy
per unit area of the wave has to increase... so the wave height
increases.

Ultimately... steep waves create many problems for boaters of all
shapes and sizes. Steep waves are those with wave heights that are
nearly equal to their wave period. Steep waves create hazardous
navigation conditions that can be further compounded by tidal
currents near bars... inlets and port entrances.

When waves are expected to become large or steep... boaters should
strongly consider remaining in port until conditions improve.

If you encounter steep or large waves... point the forward end of
the boat into the waves. Never ride parallel to the waves during
these conditions so that your vessel does not overturn.

Always make sure that you... your crew and passengers are wearing
properly fitted and Coast Guard approved life jackets.

Remember to stay safe when you are boating.
