Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Friday, May 25, 2012.

Expect more active weather to develop across the Great Lakes on Friday, as a low pressure system moves from the Upper Midwest into eastern Canada. This system will push a cold front over the Great Lakes and Midwest, producing scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout the day. There is a slight chance that some of these storms will turn severe with strong winds and large hail. Rainfall totals will range from 1 to 2 inches, with over 2 inches likely in areas of severe weather development.

Behind this activity in the West, a low pressure system will move over the Great Basin and into the Southern Rockies. Flow around this system will produce cooler temperatures across the West, while also triggering scattered showers over the Pacific Northwest, northern California, and Intermountain West. Snow showers may develop again across the highest elevations of the Northern Rockies.

Meanwhile in the East, high pressure builds from the Plains, over the Mississippi River Valley, and into the Eastern US. This will keep moisture away to the north, allowing for dry, sunny, and warm conditions. High temperatures will range in the 80s and 90s from the Central Plains through the Eastern Valleys, with parts of the Southern US reaching into the lower 100s.

... Areas of fog...

Fog is expected to form and persist across much of New Jersey and
northeast Pennsylvania early this morning. The fog may become
locally dense... with visibilities dropping below one-half mile at
times. The fog will likely persist beyond sunrise in many areas.

If you will be out driving early today... make sure to prepare for
a slower trip... since it is best to drive at a reduced speed in
the fog. Use low-beam headlights and do not follow too close to
the car ahead of you.

Public Information Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 4:55 am EDT on May 25, 2012

... National safe boating week ends today may 25th...

This is the final in the daily series of considerations for boaters
this Summer.

Fog can be a navigation hazard.

Fog forms when warm dewpoint air is persistently transported over a
colder sea surface. Fog can form quickly and catch boaters off
guard. The visibility can be reduced to a few feet... disorienting
boaters.

If encountering fog... navigate at a slower than normal speed. Turn
on all your running lights, even during daytime. Listen for sounds
of other boats that may be near you or for fog horns and Bells from
nearby buoys. Use GPS or a navigation chart to help obtain a fix at
your location. If you are unable to get your bearings, stay put until
the fog lifts but make sure you are in as safe a location as
possible.

Ultimately... safety is your responsibility. Know your risks when
venturing onto the water. Be prepared... including ensuring your
vessel has the required equipment such as life jackets and distress
signals. Create a float plan... telling a friend of your whereabouts and
when you plan to return.

Have a safe and enjoyable Summer on the area waters.
